More than ever, how we look is increasingly important. A smile that looks good is one of our best assets. It helps us to feel confident in ourselves, and it affects how other people see us. A white, straight, healthy smile is a must for many of us these days.

If your smile needs a little help cosmetically, dental veneers may be the solution. They can correct several issues, including teeth that are discolored, misshapen, and chipped, as well as correcting crooked teeth and small gaps between teeth.

What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are wafer-thin slivers of material that are affixed to the front of a tooth. They are produced from hard-wearing material, typically porcelain, and custom-made to fit your tooth exactly. They are applied to a single tooth, or in a row across the teeth you show when you smile.

An excellent cosmetic solution, dental veneers offer a quick and effective treatment. They are easy to match your existing teeth in terms of color, resist stains, and cause minimal interference to the natural structure of your teeth.

Am I a Suitable Candidate for Veneers?

As for any cosmetic dentistry treatment, you must have excellent underlying dental and oral health. Teeth must show no signs of decay and gums should be free of active signs of gum disease to protect your oral health after treatment and to make sure your veneers last for years to come.

You must be committed to cleaning and flossing your teeth regularly and have regular dental exams to maintain good oral health. While veneers are strong, you need to be careful not to exert undue force on them by crunching hard foods, or ice.

If you grind your teeth or clench your jaws (bruxism) the excessive forces of this may damage the veneers and so you may not be a good candidate for the treatment.

What Is the Procedure for Veneers?

You will have a consultation and examination with one of our dentists to talk about your goals and what you are hoping to achieve with the treatment. If it is confirmed that you are a good candidate, the next step is to prepare the teeth. A sliver of enamel is taken from the front of each tooth receiving a veneer so that when the veneer is positioned it is flush with the front of your other teeth. Impressions of your teeth are taken and dispatched to an offsite laboratory, along with details of the shade(s) required, where your veneers are produced.

Once we have received your veneers from the laboratory, you can come in to have them fitted. We will hold them up to your existing teeth to check fit and color and can make any small adjustments to the size before bonding them securely to the teeth.

On average, veneers last for ten years, but with good maintenance, there is no reason why they shouldn’t last even longer.
