How Does Invisalign Work?

Made from a flexible plastic, Invisalign clear aligners are custom-made to fit over your teeth. They are FDA-approved and designed to apply the right amount of pressure to gradually move your teeth. The treatment is a process where a series of aligners are worn to gently straighten teeth, rather than tightening wires attached to metal brackets, which is how traditional braces work.

Will Invisalign Work for Me?

While Invisalign aligners are a great treatment option for both children and adults, you will need to discuss your goals with one of our Invisalign-trained experts. The treatment can be used to improve common bite and teeth-straightening problems, but you must be committed to using the appliances for 20-22 hours a day.

How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Take?

The average treatment time with Invisalign is 12 to 18 months, but factors such as how often you wear your aligners, and how complex your case is will affect the length of your treatment.

What is the Treatment Process for Invisalign?

The process begins with a consultation with one of our Invisalign-trained dentists. Following an oral examination and dental x-rays, a custom-made treatment plan is mapped out which outlines the transformation of your smile in a step-by-step process. During the exam you will receive a professional dental cleaning.

Once the plan is agreed upon, the next step is for your unique aligners to be made. The aligners will usually be sent out in batches, so you can switch to a new aligner every one or two weeks, as directed by your dentist. You will need to see your dentist as regularly as they recommend (typically every four to six weeks) so they can ensure that your treatment is going to plan.

When Should I Take the Aligners Out?

The treatment process requires you to wear your aligners for up to 22 hours a day, which means you will need to wear them at night. However, you will need to remove them for eating and drinking (apart from water), and for brushing your teeth and flossing. You may also need to take them out for certain sports.

You must keep your mouth clean and free from debris. Thus, you will need to clean and floss your teeth after eating to ensure you remove debris from between your teeth which may make wearing the aligners uncomfortable, and to keep the mouth clean from harmful bacteria.

How Do I Clean My Aligners?

Aligners are easy to keep clean. You may rinse them in water as long as it is not hot as this may warp the aligners. You can brush them with a toothbrush and toothpaste or use the Invisalign cleaning system which will remove plaque in as little as 15 minutes.

Some food and drinks will stain the aligners, even if you have residue left in your mouth. Smoking is not recommended because as well as being detrimental to your health, it will stain your aligners.
