What Makes Teeth Yellow?

A great smile is a huge asset and one of the simplest ways of improving it is by having it whitened. Teeth tend to discolor gradually, and there are several factors that contribute to them becoming yellow.

Smoking

Not only is smoking a bad habit that contributes to bad health, the tar from smoking cigarettes stains teeth. Heavy smokers’ teeth tend to turn yellow, with the worst cases having unattractive brown stains, particularly on the back of the front teeth.

Diet

Tooth enamel can be discolored by food and drink. Black coffee, tea, curries, fruit, and fizzy drinks contain chemicals that are renowned for staining teeth. The rule of thumb is that if it stains your clothes, it can stain your teeth.

Enamel Erosion

The outer layer of the teeth, called the enamel, is worn down by chewing, but food and drinks containing sugar, as well as those that are acidic, can erode tooth enamel. As the layer of enamel starts to thin, the yellow dentin layer underneath is exposed which gives the teeth a yellow appearance.

Aging

The natural process of aging also contributes to yellow-looking teeth. This may be because the enamel has thinned, but as we age the dentin layer thickens which minimizes the translucent qualities of the tooth and contributes to a yellow tinge.

What Teeth Whitening Treatments Are Carried Out by Dentists?

Professional teeth whitening treatments include laser teeth whitening and at-home whitening kits.

Laser teeth whitening provides the most dramatic results, whitening the teeth by up to 14 shades. Although there are multiple different whitening systems in use, they all work in essentially the same way. A bleaching gel is applied to the teeth and a laser directed at the gel to activate the whitening agents. Some systems require one application, whereas others require several. In all cases, the treatment takes around an hour with immediate results.

You will need two appointments with us for at-home whitening kits. During the first visit, we will take impressions of your mouth. These are sent to a laboratory where custom-made trays are produced to fit over your teeth. You will come back to see us to pick up the trays and the whitening gel. The trays are filled with whitening gel and worn overnight for a period of two weeks, or until you are happy with the whitening effect achieved.

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

When carried out by a dentist, teeth whitening is a safe procedure. We will check your dental health to ensure you have no problems that will make the treatment unsafe. Your teeth should be free of decay and you should have no active signs of gum disease. If there are any issues, we can carry out the appropriate treatments so that your teeth and gums are healthy enough for you to have a whitening treatment.

You should also be aware that some stains on the teeth will not be removed with whitening treatments, including teeth stained by tetracycline antibiotics, which is when it is helpful to talk to us about alternatives.
